POETIC CONJECTURE
A Poem for MommaBaby
Momma inhales
belly expanding,
the roundness of the sun
echoing in pure delight
as the rays of its light
imbue and are imbued
by the light that is forming,
moving, swaying, dancing
in this womb--
this womb
that is held by womb
before her
and womb before her
and wombs before her,
and all these embodiments
of the evolving light
and how she, how we, are held
in this Earthwomb
We are all just learning...
learning to be held
and to hold,
and to let go,
as we sway in this
salty sea water
that is as sweet
as the nectar that bees
hum into being,
as we all,
breathing beings,
learn to be
Be la, do la...
My teacher says we should
be called "belas,"
us doulas...
because our job is
not so much to do,
as it is to be,
and to help you be
all that you can be
as you bring the little being
that breathes inside of you
into this beautiful life
About Doulas
Women's cycles link up. Our nervous systems and hormones listen to each other, and respond to one another. If one woman spends time with another who is bleeding, the first woman will start bleeding sooner than usual. If one woman is nervous, other woman around her take on some of that nervous energy. But if there is one woman who is calm and centered, that energy permeates a space and the women inside the room. Birthing women deserve to have a woman in the room who is calm, centered, and emotionally unattached to the family in order to provide the support a birthing woman needs. You need your midwife or doctor. And it's wonderful to have a partner or loved one there too. But having a doula means having a woman in the room whose job it is to be the grounded anchor for the collective nervous system. The research on doulas is clear. If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical to not make sure every birthing woman had it. Every woman deserves a doula. The doula is an ancient role. The midwife/doctor is the hands. The doula is the heart.
Offerings
I offer doula services on a sliding scale. Prenatal visits, support with birthing plans, presence and support during birth, and postnatal birthing art included. Deep care and listening are the foundation of my support of birthing mothers. Special support (emotionally and financially) given to mothers who are birthing children with craniofacial birth defects and other abnormalities.
